Literacy Learning at CRSS

Over the past few weeks, some parents have asked about literacy learning at CRSS. With the big S. T. E. M. in our name, one may wonder about the important basics: reading and writing. Though we are a STEM school, we realize that strong reading, writing, and comprehension skills are the gateway to other disciplines. CRSS staff will dedicate a significant portion of each day to build each child’s literacy through differentiated instruction. Literacy centers, games, guided reading, conferencing, ORF (Oral Reading Fluency) checks , and a variety of other strategies will be a part of the curriculum. With our commitment to student-centered, integrated learning, students will engage in a variety of literacy activities in the context of other subjects. This experience will provide students with meaningful opportunities to build connections and utilize their emerging and developing skills.

When students are learning to read it is crucial that they are provided instruction at their zone of proximal development. This “zone” is different for each child; it is the place where students feel challenged, yet not overwhelmed. It is where the child may work primarily independently, yet be provided with a little help to support their achievement. Working in this zone not only helps children learn optimally, it also helps to build each child’s confidence and self-esteem. With our small class sizes, we will know each student. Knowing our students well will allow us to target our instruction to each child’s zone of proximal development and meet each child’s needs, building on each child’s strengths and interests.

We are happy to connect with our families and engage about the work of our school. Please don’t hesitate to contact us with your questions. We are eager to build our school community where a love of learning thrives and each child is supported, challenged, and celebrated.

We look forward to getting to know you and your children!
